Oak Park

Frank Lloyd Wright, literary history, and village charm

About Oak Park

Oak Park is a historic village of 52,000 residents located directly west of Chicago, known worldwide as the home of Frank Lloyd Wright, who designed 25 buildings here including the iconic Unity Temple and his own Home and Studio on Chicago Avenue. The village is also the birthplace of Ernest Hemingway, and its literary and architectural heritage attracts visitors from around the globe.

Beyond the tourism draw, Oak Park is a deeply livable community with a walkable downtown centered on Lake Street and Marion Street, excellent CTA Green Line and Blue Line access to downtown Chicago (roughly 25 minutes), and strong public schools in District 97 (elementary) and District 200 (Oak Park and River Forest High School, or OPRF). The village's commitment to diversity, the arts, and historic preservation gives it a distinctive character among Chicago's inner-ring suburbs.

Housing in Oak Park ranges from the grand Victorians and Prairie-style homes in the Frank Lloyd Wright Historic District to more modest brick bungalows, vintage condos near the Green Line stations, and new-construction townhomes in the village's designated transit-oriented development areas. The market appeals to a broad buyer pool: young families, architecture enthusiasts, city workers who want suburban schools without a long commute, and investors attracted by the proximity to the CTA.

Lifestyle & Dining

Oak Park's dining scene centers on the walkable village core. Hemmingway's Bistro on Marion Street (a deliberate nod to the village's most famous literary son) does French-inflected fine dining, while Pete's Red Hots on Chicago Avenue has been slinging classic Chicago dogs for decades. Buzz Cafe on Harrison Street feels like someone's living room in the best possible way, and it is the go-to brunch spot.

Lake Street has a growing roster of restaurants: Maya Del Sol for nuevo Latin cuisine, Cucina Paradiso for Italian on North Boulevard, and Poor Phil's on Pleasant Street for patio season. Kindling on Harrison Street is leading the village's craft cocktail movement.

Arts and culture run through Oak Park's DNA. The Oak Park Art League has been here since 1921, the Lake Theatre shows independent and classic films, and the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust runs guided walking tours of the Historic District. Unity Temple, Wright's masterpiece of public architecture, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Every May, the Wright Plus Housewalk opens doors to privately owned Wright-designed homes that you would otherwise never see inside.

Schools & Families

Schools are a major reason families move to Oak Park. District 97 runs eight K-5 neighborhood schools including Holmes, Irving, Longfellow, and Beye, all with strong academics and active parent organizations. Julian Middle School and the recently renovated Percy Julian Middle School handle 6th through 8th grade.

Oak Park and River Forest High School (OPRF) is the school that makes parents relocate here. Over 3,300 students, an award-winning arts program, competitive athletics (the Huskies), and college counseling that consistently places graduates at top-tier universities. The school's commitment to equity and diverse programming has been recognized nationally.

Private options include Fenwick High School (a Dominican college-prep on Washington Boulevard) and Ascension Catholic School. For younger children, several Montessori programs operate in the community, and the Oak Park Conservatory runs nature-based educational programs. The Park District manages extensive youth sports leagues, camps, and enrichment activities year-round.

Transit & Commute

Oak Park is one of the best-connected inner suburbs in Chicagoland, with both CTA Green Line and Blue Line service. The Green Line's Oak Park, Ridgeland, and Austin stations run along Lake Street, providing direct access to the Loop in about 25 minutes. The Blue Line's Oak Park station on Harlem Avenue connects to O'Hare Airport in approximately 35 minutes.

Multiple Pace bus routes serve the village, including the #305 Harlem and #309 Lake Street routes. The Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) runs along Oak Park's southern border, providing car access to downtown Chicago and the western suburbs. Metra's Union Pacific West line stops at the nearby River Forest station, offering an additional express commute option to Ogilvie Transportation Center.

Oak Park's compact layout and flat terrain make walking and biking viable for most daily errands. The village has invested in bike lanes on major streets and participates in the Divvy bike-share system. Residents frequently walk or bike to the Green Line for their commute, avoiding the expense and hassle of downtown parking.

Parks & Recreation

The Park District manages 18 parks across the village. Scoville Park in the heart of downtown is a tree-shaded green space that hosts the summer farmers' market, outdoor concerts, and community gatherings. Rehm Park on Garfield Street has an aquatic center, skate park, tennis courts, and the Cheney Mansion grounds.

The Oak Park Conservatory on Garfield Street is worth seeking out. Three climate-controlled greenhouses with Mediterranean, tropical, and desert plant collections, all free to the public. They run workshops, plant sales, and educational programs throughout the year.

For outdoor fitness, the Des Plaines River Trail runs along the village's western edge and connects to a regional trail network spanning over 55 miles. Community centers offer indoor pools, fitness classes, and gym sports. Soccer, basketball, adult softball, and other leagues organized through the Park District pull strong participation from across the village.
