Chicago's gallery district meets luxury high-rise living
River North is Chicago at its most polished. This dense, high-energy district sits between the Chicago River to the south and west, Michigan Avenue to the east, and Chicago Avenue to the north. Back in the 1970s, artists and gallery owners started converting old factories into studio spaces, and that initial wave created what is still the largest concentration of art galleries outside Manhattan.
Today the neighborhood runs on luxury high-rise condos, converted timber-loft buildings, a restaurant scene that rivals any in the country, and nightlife that draws visitors from across the Midwest. The Merchandise Mart, that massive Art Deco landmark on the river, anchors the western edge with 1stDibs gallery events and design showrooms. Marina City's corncob towers are recognizable worldwide.
The lifestyle here is truly walkable. The Magnificent Mile, Michigan Avenue shopping, and the Riverwalk are all within a few blocks. The real estate market is almost entirely condominiums, ranging from intimate vintage loft conversions on Hubbard Street to full-floor penthouses in buildings like the Trump International Hotel and Tower.

Nowhere in Chicago packs more restaurants per block than River North. RPM Italian on Ontario Street (the Rancic family's place) is a power-lunch institution. Girl and the Goat on West Randolph, Stephanie Izard's flagship, helped launch the whole Fulton Market restaurant boom. Bavette's Bar and Boeuf on Grand Avenue does old-school steakhouse glamour right, with red velvet, live jazz, and steaks that justify the price tag.
The gallery scene along Superior Street and Franklin Street is serious. Monthly openings, First Friday events, and over 80 galleries including Zolla/Lieberman, Catherine Edelman, and Andrew Bae keep the art world rooted here.
Nightlife ranges from the intimate tiki cocktails at Three Dots and a Dash (hidden in an alley off Clark Street) to rooftop lounges like LondonHouse's terrace overlooking the Chicago River. Once it warms up, the Riverwalk becomes an extension of your living room: wine bars, kayak launches, and waterside dining all steps from your front door.
River North is more popular with young professionals and empty-nesters than families with school-age children, but those who do raise families here benefit from proximity to excellent private school options. Catherine Cook School on Scott Street is a progressive pre-K through 8th grade school with an enrollment of around 500 students. The Latin School of Chicago's upper school campus is just blocks north in the Gold Coast.
For younger children, Near North Montessori on North Avenue and Alcuin Montessori School on Ontario offer highly regarded early childhood programs. CPS options include Ogden International School, a selective-enrollment school with campuses in both Old Town and the West Loop.
Family-friendly amenities include the Chicago Children's Museum at Navy Pier (a short walk east), the Lookingglass Theatre Company in the Water Tower Water Works, and the seasonal ice rink at the Wrigley Building plaza. The neighborhood's density means that grocery stores, pharmacies, and pediatric offices are always within walking distance.
River North is one of the best-connected neighborhoods in Chicago. The Red Line at Grand and Chicago gives you direct north-south access, and the Brown Line's Merchandise Mart station covers the western side. The Loop's elevated stations on Lake and Randolph are within walking distance of River North's southern edge.
Bus routes #29 State Street, #65 Grand, and #66 Chicago run through the neighborhood. Water taxi service from the Riverwalk connects River North to Chinatown, the Willis Tower area, and Goose Island during warmer months.
Honestly, the best transit option here is your feet. You can walk to the Loop, the Magnificent Mile, and Streeterville in minutes. For drivers, the Ohio Street and Ontario Street on-ramps put you on the Kennedy Expressway (I-90/94) quickly. Parking is mostly garage-based given the density, with many buildings offering valet or self-park as part of condo assessments.
While River North is one of Chicago's most densely built neighborhoods, green space access is better than you might expect. The Chicago Riverwalk, a 1.25-mile pedestrian promenade along the main branch of the Chicago River, offers waterside dining, public art, kayak rentals through Urban Kayaks, and seasonal programming including yoga classes and live music.
Ward Park, at Chicago Avenue and Kingsbury Street, provides a neighborhood green space with a playground, basketball courts, and a dog-friendly area. The park hosts summer movie nights and community events organized by the River North Residents Association.
Golfers access the Diversey Driving Range and Sydney Marovitz Golf Course (informally known as Waveland) just a short drive north. For fitness, River North's luxury buildings typically feature extensive amenity floors with pools, gyms, and often indoor basketball or squash courts. The lakefront trail at Ohio Street Beach is roughly a 15-minute walk east through Streeterville.
Whether you are buying your first home or upgrading to your dream property, we will guide you through every step of the process in River North.
