Hinsdale

DuPage County's premier address: estate homes, Hinsdale Central, and a walkable First Street district

About Hinsdale

Hinsdale is the luxury benchmark on Chicago's western corridor. This village of 17,000 in DuPage County is where estate-caliber homes, an exceptional school district, and a walkable downtown converge in a way that few other suburbs can match. Tree-lined streets, historic architecture, and a BNSF Metra express into the city keep it at the top of the list for executives, professionals, and families who want the best suburban living Chicagoland has to offer.

The housing market here is dominated by single-family homes on generous lots, from carefully maintained vintage properties to new-construction estates that regularly clear $2 million. The Woodlands and Katherine Legge Memorial Park areas have some of the most impressive residential properties in the western suburbs, with mature landscaping and styles spanning Tudor, Colonial Revival, and contemporary luxury.

Downtown Hinsdale on First Street and Washington Street is compact and polished: upscale boutiques, fine dining, specialty shops. No big-box retailers, no strip malls. The village is intentional about preserving that character. The annual Uniquely Thursdays summer concert series in Burlington Park is the kind of community tradition that makes residents stay for decades.

Lifestyle & Dining

Hinsdale's dining options emphasize quality and sophistication. Il Poggiolo on First Street has been the village's Italian fine-dining anchor for years, offering house-made pastas and an extensive wine list in an intimate setting. Giuliano's Ristorante on South Park Street serves wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas that rival any in the city. For casual dining, Fuller House Bar on Washington Street offers craft cocktails and elevated pub fare in a converted historic building.

The downtown shopping district along First Street and Hinsdale Avenue features high-end boutiques including Kelsey Resale (designer consignment), Yankee Peddler (fine antiques), and several independent clothing and home decor shops. Kramer Foods on South Washington has served as the village's independent grocery store since 1953.

Cultural life in Hinsdale revolves around community traditions: the Uniquely Thursdays summer concert series in Burlington Park draws hundreds of families, the Hinsdale Historical Society hosts walking tours of the village's significant architecture, and the Theatre of Western Springs provides community theater just minutes away. The village's proximity to downtown Chicago means world-class museums, theaters, and dining are always within easy reach.

Schools & Families

The schools here are among the highest-performing in Illinois, full stop. Community Consolidated School District 181 runs elementary and middle schools including Monroe, Elm, and The Lane, all rated 9/10 or higher on GreatSchools. Hinsdale Middle School prepares students for one of the state's most competitive high schools.

Hinsdale Central (District 86) consistently ranks in the top 100 high schools nationally per U.S. News and World Report. Over 30 AP courses, championship-caliber athletics (the Red Devils), an award-winning performing arts program, and a college counseling office with Ivy League and top-25 placement rates that speak for themselves.

Private options nearby include Avery Coonley School (a progressive K-8 in Downers Grove), Christ the King Jesuit College Prep, and Benet Academy in Lisle. Youth sports programs, scouting troops, and enrichment activities run through the Hinsdale Park District keep families busy and connected.

Transit & Commute

The commute is one of Hinsdale's strongest selling points. The Metra BNSF station on Washington Street, right in the heart of downtown, runs express service to Union Station in about 30 minutes. That is one of the fastest suburb-to-downtown commutes in Chicagoland. West Hinsdale station covers the western neighborhoods.

Drivers use I-294 (Tri-State Tollway) and Ogden Avenue (US 34) as the primary expressway and arterial routes. I-88 is accessible via I-294 for connections to the western suburbs and downtown. Hinsdale's central DuPage County location puts both O'Hare (about 30 minutes) and Midway (about 25 minutes) within easy reach.

The village itself is compact enough that most residential areas are within walking or biking distance of downtown, the Metra station, and local schools. Sidewalk improvements and designated bike routes along key corridors make it practical to leave the car in the garage for daily errands.

Parks & Recreation

The Hinsdale Park District operates Katherine Legge Memorial Park (KLM), a 52-acre estate-turned-public-park that is the village's signature green space. The park features walking trails through mature woods, a historic lodge available for private events, open fields for community festivals, and one of the area's most scenic settings.

Burlington Park, adjacent to the downtown Metra station, hosts the summer concert series and serves as the village's central gathering space. Brook Park on Columbia Street offers playgrounds, picnic areas, and creek-side trails. Veeck Park features tennis courts, a playground, and the Hinsdale Community Pool, which is a summer focal point for families.

The village's proximity to the Salt Creek Greenway Trail provides access to over 30 miles of paved multi-use trails for cycling, running, and cross-country skiing. Golfers enjoy the private Hinsdale Golf Club and the public Ruth Lake Country Club. For winter recreation, many families head to nearby Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve in Darien for cross-country skiing and snow-shoeing.
